Preparing the Stage for the World: ASG Consults on Major Stadium Field Remediation for the 2026 World Cup
When the world’s most watched sporting event comes to North America, the standards for the
playing surface are nothing short of absolute perfection. The 2026 World Cup demands a pitch that is flawless, consistent, and capable of supporting the highest level of athletic performance on the planet. Every blade of grass matters. Every millimeter of grade matters. There is no margin for error.
That is why Advanced Sports Group is proud to announce our involvement in a massive natural
turf field remediation project at a major stadium in Los Angeles, California, in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
As one of the premier venues selected to host World Cup matches, this stadium is undergoing a meticulous transformation to ensure its natural turf surface meets the rigorous international
standards required for tournament play. ASG has been brought in to consult on this high-profile sports construction project, bringing our decades of specialized field building expertise directly to the world stage.
What Is Field Remediation and Why Does It Matter?
Field remediation is the process of restoring, rebuilding, or improving an existing sports surface to meet a new or higher standard of performance. For a venue like this, which regularly hosts professional sports games, major concerts, and other large-scale events, the existing natural turf surface must be carefully evaluated and rebuilt to meet the strict specifications for international soccer. This is not simply a matter of laying new sod and calling it done. A compliant natural grass pitch requires precise engineering from the ground up, starting with the sub-base and working all the way to the finished playing surface. The remediation process involves assessing the existing drainage infrastructure, establishing a precise finish grade, and installing high- performance natural turf in a way that creates a seamless, safe, and perfectly even playing surface.
For ASG, this type of work is at the core of what we do. Whether we are building a new synthetic turf field for a Georgia high school or consulting on a natural turf remediation for a World Cup venue, the principles of sports construction remain the same: get the foundation right, and the surface will perform.
The Critical Role of Planarity
The most technically demanding aspect of this project is achieving perfect planarity. In sports construction, planarity refers to the absolute flatness and evenness of the playing surface. For everyday recreational fields, minor variations in grade are generally acceptable. For a World Cup pitch, they are not.
At the international level, the way the ball rolls, bounces, and responds to the surface is directly tied to the quality of the grade beneath it. Even a small deviation in planarity can affect the trajectory of a pass, the footing of a player making a sharp cut, or the bounce of a ball in a critical moment. The players competing on this surface will be the best in the world, and the surface must be worthy of them.
ASG’s consulting role focuses heavily on the finish grading phase of the project. Our team is on site in Los Angeles to oversee the laser grading of the sub-base, ensuring that the foundation is built to exact specifications before a single roll of sod is placed. This is the phase of sports construction that most people never see, but it is the phase that determines whether the finished field will truly perform at the highest level.
The Sod Installation: Where Precision Meets Performance
Once the finish grade has been established and verified, the project moves into the sod installation phase. Installing natural turf in a stadium of this scale is a massive, highly coordinated operation that requires careful attention to detail at every step.
ASG is consulting on the logistics and execution of the sod installation, with a particular focus on seam management and surface integration. When large rolls of thick-cut natural turf are laid side by side, the seams between each roll must be perfectly tight and flush with one another. Any gaps, overlaps, or uneven edges create potential tripping hazards for athletes and disrupt the true, consistent roll of the soccer ball that these standards require.
Beyond the seams, the sod must be properly rolled and settled into the finish grade to ensure complete contact between the root zone and the prepared sub-base. This integration process is critical to the long-term health and stability of the natural turf surface, especially given the compressed timeline and the intensity of use the field will experience during the tournament.
From Georgia to the World Cup Stage
Advanced Sports Group is a sports construction company rooted in the Southeastern United States. We build fields for high schools, universities, professional teams, municipalities, and recreational complexes across Georgia and the broader Southeast. Our portfolio includes everything from small community baseball infields to large-scale multi-sport synthetic turf complexes serving thousands of athletes every weekend.
Consulting on the this stadium remediation is a reflection of the expertise and reputation our team has built over decades of sports field construction. It is a project that demands the same precision, attention to detail, and commitment to building quality that we bring to every job, regardless of the size of the stadium or the size of the community.
We are proud to play a role in preparing this field for the world stage, and we are equally proud that the same team doing this work in Los Angeles is the team building fields in Dublin, Sandersville, and Rome, Georgia.
Follow Along from the Field
Over the next two weeks, our VP of Special Projects, Pete Fox, will be documenting the project from on site in LA. We will be sharing behind-the-scenes video and photos of the finish grading, the sod installation, and the final surface checks.
