From the Dust Bowl to Premium Landscape Turf: Beacon Hill Middle School | ASG

Every school has that one outdoor space. It is the area where grass refuses to grow, where rain turns the ground into a muddy mess, and where dry days create clouds of dirt. At Beacon Hill Middle School, this space had earned a fitting nickname: the “Dust Bowl.”

For years, the Dust Bowl was an unusable eyesore. It was a space that students avoided and administrators struggled to maintain. But this year, that all changed. Advanced Sports Group was honored to partner with the school system, the project engineers, and the turf manufacturer to completely transform this area. Through a comprehensive landscape turf installation, we turned the Dust Bowl into one of the most popular and vibrant spaces on campus.

Maintaining natural grass in high-traffic areas of a school campus is nearly impossible.
Between hundreds of students walking, playing, and gathering every day, the soil quickly becomes compacted, and the grass dies off. The result is exactly what Beacon Hill experienced: a dusty, barren patch of dirt that is unusable for most of the year.

School administrators are increasingly recognizing that traditional landscaping solutions are not effective for these intense use areas. Pouring concrete or laying asphalt solves the mud problem, but it creates a harsh, uninviting environment that increases ambient heat and offers no aesthetic appeal. The ideal solution requires durability, safety, and a natural look. That is where premium landscape turf comes in.

To solve the Dust Bowl problem, Advanced Sports Group executed a full landscape turf installation. This process is similar to our sports field construction but tailored specifically for aesthetic and recreational use.

The project began with the excavation and removal of the existing dirt and debris. Our crews then installed a robust, free-draining aggregate base. Just like a sports field, proper drainage is critical for landscape turf. This base ensures that rainwater moves quickly through the system, preventing puddles and keeping the surface dry and usable even after heavy storms.

Once the base was prepared, we installed high-quality synthetic landscape turf. Unlike the turf used on a football or baseball field, landscape turf is designed to mimic the look and feel of natural grass as closely as possible. It features a varied blade structure and a thatch layer that provides a soft, cushioned surface that is perfect for students to sit, read, or play on.

The true measure of a school construction project is how the students respond to it. Recently, the Advanced Sports Group team had the privilege of attending the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new space at Beacon Hill Middle School.
Seeing the transformation firsthand was incredible, but watching the students immediately gravitate to the new turf was the real highlight. What was once an area to be avoided is now a clean, safe, and inviting environment. Students were sitting on the grass, socializing, and enjoying the outdoors without the worry of dirt or mud. The Dust Bowl is officially a thing of the past.

At Advanced Sports Group, we are widely known as field builders, constructing high- performance athletic facilities across the Southeast. However, projects like Beacon Hill Middle School remind us that our work goes well beyond the stadium.
Whether we are installing a 80,000 square foot football field or transforming a middle school courtyard, our core mission remains the same: building quality spaces for the people who use them.
